BAST Hosts Successful Cross-disciplinary Exchange for Young Scientists in Meteorology and Emergency Response

        On August 12-13, 2024, the Beijing Association for Science and Technology (BAST) successfully convened its "Cross-disciplinary Exchange for Young Scientists" event, centering on meteorological advancements and emergency practices driven by new productive forces. Under BAST's guidance, the Beijing Meteorological Society and Beijing Science and Technology Association Comprehensive Service Center co-hosted the event, with the IUM and the Joint Laboratory for AI and Digital Meteorological Applications providing organizational support.

        The exchange highlighted innovative tech developments at the intersection of AI, meteorology, emergency management, and geospatial sciences. Discussions encompassed frontier scientific breakthroughs, strategies for nurturing young talent, synergies between industry sectors, and frameworks for facilitating multidisciplinary dialogue and idea exchange.

"Young Scientists Forum" Sparks Lively Debate

       On August 12, the Institute of Urban Meteorology (IUM) hosted the "Young Scientists Forum," featuring an opening speech by Ji Chongping, Deputy Director and Party Committee Member of the Beijing Meteorological Bureau. Chaired by Miao Shiguang, Beijing Meteorological Society Secretary-General and IUM Dean, the forum saw vibrant exchanges among experts and emerging scientists. Discussions spanned AI large models, NWP, extreme weather analysis, renewable energy integration, HPC, cutting-edge instrumentation, disaster response, urban resilience strategies, and geospatial big data analytics. The forum showcased presentations from ten Young Talent Support Program awardees, highlighting their interdisciplinary research outcomes. Participants engaged in spirited debates on AI's dual-edged impact, multi-stakeholder support frameworks for emerging talent, and strategies to catalyze cross-disciplinary innovation. The event, which was also livestreamed, attracted over 15,000 online viewers and garnered more than 1.24 million impressions.

"Tea Time Talks" Fosters Intergenerational Knowledge Exchange

       On the afternoon of August 12, the "Tea Time Talks" session brought together seasoned experts and rising stars from academia, research institutions, operational departments, and professional associations for an enriching dialogue on career development. Young Talent Support Program awardees showcased their research achievements in urban hydrology, environmental health, urban safety, geological hazards, and emergency planning. The event featured a diverse array of interactive formats, including personal reflections, guest dialogues, and lightning talks, centering on the theme of overcoming challenges in professional growth. The relaxed atmosphere facilitated cross-disciplinary conversations and networking, allowing participants to seek advice and share experiences freely.

"New Productivity Observers" Conduct Field Studies in Tech Hubs

       On August 13, Young Talent Support Program awardees, acting as "New Productivity Observers," visited Zhongguancun Software Park and Zhongguancun Environmental Protection Park. At Beijing Digital Transformation Technology Co., Ltd., they explored smart city initiatives and digital governance innovations in Beijing. Through roundtable discussions, they examined the application of industry-specific large language models, integrated urban management systems, and critical urban infrastructure technologies. The itinerary culminated at Huawei's strategic showcase—the Beijing Exhibition Center—where participants examined cutting-edge solutions boosting digital productivity across industries. Discussions centered on how emerging productive forces are catalyzing technological breakthroughs for high-quality sectoral growth.

       Breaking conventional disciplinary silos, this cross-sector event adopted a "niche intersections, broad convergence" strategy to elevate Beijing's standing as a premier talent destination. It catered to emerging scientists' professional aspirations in showcasing expertise, conducting joint research, and bridging the industry-research divide. The 18 Young Talent Support Program recipients benefited from academic dialogues, career development sessions, and site visits that stimulated innovative thinking, fostered ideation, and broadened collaborative prospects. This initiative reaffirmed scientific associations' crucial function in cohesing, mobilizing, and empowering the next generation of researchers.
