On Oct. 21-22, Researcher Ma Jianli and Associate Researcher Liu Ruiting participated in a Seminar on the “Extreme Rainfall Intensity Forecasting Technique R&D and Application Demonstration” program. Liang Xudong, Head of the National Key Laboratory of Disaster Weather, CAMS, directed the Seminar. Experts and technicians from the CMA Earth System Modeling and Prediction Center, Nanjing Joint Institute for Atmospheric Sciences, National Meteorological Center of CMA, and Henan Meteorological Service, etc. attended the Seminar.

Ma Jianli made a report entitled “Progress on Extreme Rainfall Intensity Fast Analysis, Assimilation, and Fusion Technology R&D Based on Multi-source Observational Data”. He pointed out that the multi-band dual-polarization distributed radar networking technology was developed; and for precipitation estimation after radar networking, a tile partition-based fast adaptive algorithm could be used to correct the estimated precipitation obtained by the radar. In the end, a far analysis system was proposed for real-time conditions of extreme rainfall intensity by multi-source data fusion. Besides, the multi-source observational data can be adopted to develop a fast 4DVAR assimilation and fusion analysis technology for the parent storm in extreme rainfall intensity conditions.

At the meeting, the persons in charge of the program separately introduced their R&D progress and working assumptions. Relevant experts offered some suggestions on technical details and scientific problems. Without a doubt, this Seminar lays a foundation for subsequent steps of this program.
