On Oct. 9, the China Meteorological Administration publicized the 2024 meteorological scientific and technological achievement appraisal results. “Fast Simulation Prediction System of Urban Micro-scale Meteorology and Its Application in Key Areas” led by the Institute of Urban Meteorology (IUM), CMA, Beijing was rated as “Excellent”.
In addition to overcoming spatial resolution and timeliness limitations of the conventional weather forecast, it innovatively combines building-based fine simulation and a mesoscale forecasting technique to construct an urban micro-scale fast meteorological prediction model named URBAN. The proposed model fills a technical gap in fast meteorological factor prediction in complex urban environments. Moreover, the key technology of the fast simulation prediction system of urban micro-scale meteorology has been successfully applied in meteorological support for major events such as the Beijing Winter Olympics and the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games. Not only is precise meteorological service provided for key areas in a city, but a new norm and strong meteorological support can also be provided for urban meteorological services, emergency responses, and future events.
Meteorological scientific and technological achievement appraisal can motivate researchers to create and innovate, promote close integration of meteorological scientific and technological innovation with meteorological services, and facilitate high-quality development of urban meteorological undertakings. Later, the IUM will fully exert the demonstration effects of scientific and technological achievements and actively promote the transformation and application of such achievements.
